United Life Annuity Review 2026: Products & Ratings

The Combination That Does Not Exist

United Life's WealthChoice 10 can be presented with a premium bonus or with its guaranteed-lifetime-benefit rider, but the carrier says those two features cannot be combined. That missing combination is more important than a long feature list: a buyer must decide whether the contract's job is bonus-led accumulation or contractual lifetime withdrawals before comparing the illustration.

The United Life Lineup Reconciliation

Carrier familyWhat the carrier saysWhat to verify in ARHQ
Performance SPDAA declared-rate contract with 3-, 5-, and 7-year guarantee periods and a market value adjustment.Check the live directory for the exact term and state form.
Access SPDAA declared-rate contract with 4- and 6-year guarantee periods and no market value adjustment. If no live ARHQ record appears, treat that as unavailable data—not proof of discontinuation.
WealthChoiceA fixed indexed family with 5-, 7-, and 10-year surrender periods.Match the contract length and rider version instead of counting product cards as interchangeable.
WealthChoice optionsThe guaranteed-lifetime-benefit rider is offered on the 7- and 10-year versions; the premium bonus belongs to the 10-year version and cannot be combined with that rider.A bonus version and an income-rider version solve different problems; verify which form generated the quote.

This reconciliation is deliberately source-bounded. It says what United Life currently publishes and what ARHQ currently observes; it does not force those two inventories to match or turn a missing feed record into a zero.

ARHQ's live rate index currently tracks 5 United Life products. That is a feed census, not a claim that every current carrier product or state form is quoted.

The Company Behind the Catalog

United Life Insurance Company, NAIC 69973, was founded in Iowa in 1962 and remains based in Cedar Rapids. It began as the life-insurance subsidiary of United Fire Group. United Fire announced the sale in 2017, and Kuvare completed the acquisition on March 30, 2018 for $280 million in cash.

Kuvare supplies the broader insurance platform and ownership context, but United Life remains the named insurer responsible for its contracts. Sister-company products, parent assets, and platform capabilities should not be silently attributed to United Life itself.

Read the A- as a Rating-Unit Result

AM Best affirmed an A- (Excellent) Financial Strength Rating and stable outlook for the Kuvare Retail Group on December 17, 2025. United Life is a member of that rating unit, and AM Best reviewed the result again on June 23, 2026. The clean description is therefore “A- with a stable outlook within the Kuvare Retail Group,” not a stronger claim about a standalone rating analysis that the action did not provide.

United Life materials do not consistently describe A- with the same ordinal wording. The letter grade and AM Best descriptor are sufficient; this review does not resolve a marketing-language conflict by choosing whichever ordinal sounds better.

A State Count Is Not a Product Footprint

United Life and its product materials do not present Vermont consistently in their broad licensing and product-availability statements. More importantly, an insurer's authority to operate in a state does not prove that a particular contract, rider, or term is approved there. This review therefore does not publish a universal state count. The application and disclosure for the proposed product control.

Evidence for a Shortlist

  • The choices are legible. Performance, Access, and WealthChoice separate declared-rate, MVA, indexed-crediting, bonus, and income-rider decisions.
  • The current rating is established. AM Best affirmed the A- group result with a stable outlook in December 2025.
  • The legal issuer is clear. United Life—not Kuvare or a sister carrier—owes the guarantees on a United Life contract.

Evidence Against Rushing the Choice

  • The public inventories do not line up perfectly. Use the carrier brochure and the live quote together instead of assuming either page is a complete master catalog.
  • Availability is form-specific. State authority, contract approval, term, and rider availability must all be checked separately.
  • Product labels conceal consequential forks. An MVA, a premium bonus, and a lifetime-benefit rider change the decision even when the carrier name stays the same.

A Catalog-Reconciliation Verdict

United Life is a reasonable shortlist candidate for buyers who want a focused fixed-annuity carrier with an established A- group rating. The verdict is conditional on completing one matching exercise: the proposed quote must be tied to the exact product family, surrender period, MVA treatment, rider choice, and approved state form. If the broker's label, carrier brochure, and live product page do not describe the same contract, stop before comparing returns.

Where Current Terms Belong

Declared rates and indexed-crediting terms change. Use the United Life product directory, its fixed indexed annuity pages, and the annuity rate report for the current quote. Keep this review for the issuer, catalog, and contract-selection questions that do not belong in a changing rate table.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does ARHQ show a different United Life lineup from the carrier website?

The carrier website is the current official catalog, while ARHQ is a live feed of the products and forms available to its data source. A missing ARHQ record is an honest data gap, not evidence that United Life discontinued the contract.

What is the practical difference between Performance SPDA and Access SPDA?

Both are declared-rate single-premium deferred annuities, but Performance uses a market value adjustment and offers 3-, 5-, and 7-year guarantee periods, while Access is presented without an MVA and uses 4- and 6-year periods. Surrender charges and state forms still require review.

Can the WealthChoice bonus and lifetime-benefit rider be combined?

No. United Life states that the premium bonus on the 10-year version cannot be combined with the guaranteed-lifetime-benefit rider. The rider is available on the 7- and 10-year versions.

Is United Life still owned by United Fire Group?

No. Kuvare completed its acquisition of United Life from United Fire Group on March 30, 2018. United Life remains the legal insurer responsible for its contracts.

Does United Life have a current AM Best rating?

Yes. AM Best affirmed the Kuvare Retail Group, including United Life, at A- (Excellent) with a stable outlook on December 17, 2025. AM Best reviewed the rating in June 2026.

How should I confirm whether a United Life annuity is available in my state?

Check the current application, disclosure, and state-approved form for the exact product, term, and rider. A broad company licensing statement does not establish product-level availability.
