A Sale Without Commission Still Has Work
Canvas offers a direct online route to annuities issued by Puritan Life Insurance Company of America. Canvas says its licensed representatives are non-commissioned. That changes the sales incentive, but it does not make product selection automatic or establish that a quoted rate is better than the market. The buyer still has to compare issuer strength, contract purpose, surrender terms, state availability, funding instructions, and alternatives.
The useful question is therefore not “Did an agent earn a commission?” It is “Who completed the work that a careful advisor or independent buyer would otherwise perform?”
The No-Commission Checklist
| Buyer task | Evidence to collect | Reason not to skip it |
|---|---|---|
| Confirm the legal promise-maker | The application and contract must name Puritan Life Insurance Company of America, NAIC 71390. | Canvas is the affiliate and exclusive distributor of its Future Fund and Forever Fund products, not the issuing insurer. |
| Match the product to the purpose | Use Future Fund for deferred fixed accumulation or Forever Fund for immediate income. | A MYGA account value and an irrevocable SPIA payment stream solve different problems. |
| Compare the exact contract | Match term, surrender schedule, withdrawal provisions, premium, state form, and funding date. | A direct purchase does not remove contract variations or timing risk. |
| Evaluate the issuer | Read Puritan Life’s current AM Best action and the contract’s guaranty-association notice. | The guarantee depends on Puritan Life’s claims-paying ability, not Canvas branding. |
| Test the service path | Confirm who answers application, transfer, beneficiary, withdrawal, and claim questions before funding. | Digital convenience is useful only if the buyer knows how exceptions and service requests are handled. |
| Compare outside Canvas | Obtain like-for-like quotes with the same product type, term, state, premium, and date. | No commission is not evidence of rate superiority. |
A buyer who can document each row has used the direct model as intended. A buyer who cannot should pause or obtain independent help before sending funds.
Accumulation or Immediate Income
| Canvas product | Contract purpose | Decision boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Future Fund | A multi-year guaranteed annuity for fixed, tax-deferred accumulation. | Compare the live term, surrender schedule, withdrawal rules, state form, and funding date. |
| Forever Fund | A single-premium immediate annuity that converts premium into an income stream. | Choose the payout form carefully; Canvas states the contract cannot be surrendered once issued. |
Canvas is Puritan Life’s exclusive distributor for these two branded products. Puritan Life’s own site also presents products distributed through other channels, so neither the Canvas menu nor ARHQ’s feed should be described as the insurer’s entire business.
What Canvas Does—and What Puritan Owes
Canvas Insurance Agency LLC provides the online storefront, education, application process, and licensed non-commissioned support. Puritan Life Insurance Company of America, NAIC 71390, is the Arizona-domiciled insurer named on the contract and responsible for its guarantees. Canvas describes itself as a Puritan affiliate and the exclusive distributor of Future Fund and Forever Fund.
This division should remain visible through the entire purchase. Service quality can be judged at the Canvas level; financial strength and contractual performance must be judged at the Puritan Life level.
The Three-Step Rating Record
| Date | AM Best action | What changed |
|---|---|---|
| July 17, 2025 | Affirmed B++ Financial Strength Rating; downgraded Long-Term Issuer Credit Rating from bbb+ to bbb; stable outlooks. | AM Best revised its balance-sheet-strength assessment from very strong to strong and cited significant affiliated reinsurance with Heritage Life. |
| August 1, 2025 | Placed B++ and bbb under review with developing implications. | The pending Amistad acquisition required a new assessment. |
| February 19, 2026 | Affirmed B++ and bbb, removed the under-review status, and assigned stable outlooks. | AM Best said Amistad completed the acquisition during the fourth quarter of 2025 and Puritan’s business plan remained unchanged. |
B++ is AM Best’s “Good” Financial Strength Rating for Puritan Life. It is not an ARHQ editorial rating, and this review does not convert it into a product score.
Why February 19 and February 20 Both Appear
Puritan Life’s website says the B++ rating was reaffirmed on February 20, 2026. AM Best’s rating action and disclosure report use an effective date of February 19, 2026. This review uses February 19 for the rating action because AM Best is the rating source. The one-day difference is disclosed rather than silently normalized.
The same source check corrects a larger historical error. Puritan’s website says the B++ Financial Strength Rating was originally issued on March 1, 2018. AM Best’s disclosure report gives June 30, 1976 as the initial Financial Strength Rating date and March 1, 2018 as the initial Long-Term Issuer Credit Rating date. Those are different rating records; 2018 should not be presented as the beginning of the financial-strength record.
Approval Was Not the Closing Date
Arizona’s insurance regulator approved Amistad Financial Group’s acquisition of control on June 10, 2025. AM Best later reported that the transaction was completed during the fourth quarter of 2025. The available primary records do not establish one exact closing day, so this review does not invent one.
On February 26, 2026, the regulator issued an amended approval order replacing Atlanta Life Holdings, Inc. with Atlanta Life Holdings Parent, LLC in the petitioner chain. The amended order refines the control record; it does not turn February 2026 into the acquisition closing date.
The Rest of Puritan’s Annuity Business
Puritan Life’s public product pages extend beyond the two Canvas products. Its fixed indexed annuity page identifies Market Index Annuity, distributed with Peak American Financial Group, and Interest Plus Annuity, distributed with Simplicity Group. Puritan also publishes a structured-settlement line covering qualified settlements, non-qualified settlements, and structured installment sales.
Those channels matter because “Canvas review” and “Puritan Life review” are related but not identical scopes. This page evaluates the Canvas purchase experience while keeping the broader Puritan issuer record in view; it does not imply that every Puritan contract is sold through Canvas.
Geography Stops at the Form
Puritan Life lists licenses in 45 states and the District of Columbia. Its own state list excludes Maine, New Jersey, New York, Virginia, and Vermont. That company-level authority does not establish that Future Fund, Forever Fund, a term, or a payout option is approved in every licensed jurisdiction.
Product features vary by state. The application, disclosure, and issued form for the proposed contract control; a broad licensing statement is not a substitute for product-level confirmation.
Decision Rule: Can You Do the Missing Work?
Canvas can fit a self-directed buyer who wants a digital process, understands that Puritan Life is the insurer, and can complete the no-commission checklist without treating convenience as diligence. The right result is conditional:
- Proceed only if the intended use, term or payout choice, state form, issuer rating, liquidity rules, and service path are understood.
- Compare the exact live quote against like-for-like alternatives; do not infer rate leadership from the compensation model.
- Get independent help if the tax treatment, transfer, beneficiary design, or irreversible income election is not clear.
The direct model removes a traditional commission from the Canvas sale. It does not remove the consequences of choosing the wrong annuity.
Current Canvas Product Records
Rates and quote terms change. Use the live Canvas Annuity product directory, its Future Fund MYGA pages, and the annuity rate report for current records. Forever Fund income depends on the purchaser and payout election, so obtain a current quote rather than relying on a static example.
