S&P 500 annual cap rate

9.5% cap on S&P 500

A mid-surrender accumulation fixed indexed annuity from The Standard (A-rated) with an unusually deep crediting menu — more than a dozen strategies including a recognizable S&P 500 cap, S&P 500 trigger rates, and standard and fee-bearing 'Enhanced' variants on multiple proprietary volatility-controlled indexes — on a seven-year surrender chassis with an MVA on early surrender.

Product analyst notes

How to think about this contract

Why it can stand out

  • Seven-year surrender period sits between the carrier's Enhanced Choice 5 and Enhanced Choice 10 siblings, so a buyer trades a slightly higher cap and participation rate (vs the 5-year) for two extra surrender-period years (vs the 10-year). The rate-by-strategy section on this page shows each strategy's live current rate from the feed for that comparison.
  • Crediting menu is the same deep shelf as the 5-year sibling — more than a dozen strategies in the live feed including S&P 500 cap and trigger variants, the S&P 500 Dynamic Intraday TCA, S&P 500 ESG Risk Control, S&P MARC, S&P 500 Daily Risk Control, and the BofA Global MegaTrends Index, in both standard and fee-bearing 'Enhanced' variants.
  • Standard and fee-bearing variants of the same strategies coexist in the live feed, so buyers can directly compare what an explicit annual fee buys in raised cap or participation rate — the 'Enhanced Cap Rate with Strategy Fee' on the S&P 500 and the 'Enhanced Participation Rate with Strategy Fee' on multiple proprietary indexes both appear.
  • Free-withdrawal allowance and the full seven-year surrender ladder are visible directly on this page from the live feed rather than gated behind a sales brochure. Filed broadly — the live feed shows the contract is unavailable only in New York.

What to confirm

  • Several strategies carry an explicit 'Strategy Fee' deducted annually from the account value — the published cap or participation rate on those strategies is not directly comparable to a no-fee cap on the same index because the fee compounds against the account value every year, even in flat or down years.
  • This contract has no guaranteed-lifetime-withdrawal rider in the live feed — it is not a substitute for a rider-led income product and should not be compared to one on lifetime payout.
  • Several of the index options are proprietary, volatility-controlled excess-return indexes whose participation rates look high in absolute terms but are not directly comparable to an S&P 500 cap. Evaluate each strategy on its own back-tested behavior, not the headline participation number.
  • A market value adjustment applies on early surrender on top of the surrender-charge schedule. The annual free-withdrawal allowance on this filing is lower than the carrier's EclipseMark shelf — confirm liquidity expectations before electing this filing over the EclipseMark sibling. Not available in New York.

Not ideal for

Buyers who need a guaranteed-lifetime-withdrawal rider, want a simpler one-or-two-strategy contract (Index Select 7 is the carrier's simpler seven-year FIA), or are unwilling to evaluate fee-bearing 'Enhanced' strategies on their own merits — none of those describe what this contract delivers.

Accumulation-focused — no income rider

This contract is designed for tax-deferred accumulation, not guaranteed lifetime income. No GLWB rider was returned because none is part of the contract design — compare against other accumulation FIAs on cap, participation rate, and surrender terms rather than lifetime income.

Common questions about Enhanced Choice Index Plus 7

Can I lose money in Enhanced Choice Index Plus 7?

A negative index return by itself does not reduce the contract's account value: Enhanced Choice Index Plus 7 credits 0% — the floor — for that indexed period. The account value can still decrease from applicable rider fees, Performance Rate Rider or other strategy charges, administrative charges, withdrawals, surrender charges, or other contract-specific deductions. In years with no credited interest, those deductions can reduce the account value. Up to 10% of your value can be withdrawn each year without a charge; withdrawals above the penalty-free amount during the surrender period can incur a surrender charge.

When can I access my money without a surrender charge?

Up to 10% of your account value each year is penalty-free. The surrender period runs 7 years; after that you reach full liquidity. The Liquidity tab of the analyzer shows the year-by-year surrender charge.

How do Enhanced Choice Index Plus 7's crediting strategies compare?

Use "Compare against" in the analyzer to overlay another current Enhanced Choice Index Plus 7 strategy on the same premium, age, years, and hypothetical index path. The control labels the strategy type, rate, index, and context so caps, participation rates, triggers, spreads, and fixed-account choices are not treated as interchangeable.

Crediting design

How the interest-crediting choices are framed

Enhanced Choice Index Plus 7 currently shows 20 distinct indexed or fixed crediting choices across 21 current rate listings, including S&P 500 Index, with 11 volatility-controlled index options grouped separately. These choices matter because caps, participation rates, fixed accounts, spreads, renewal terms, and fee-bearing rider variants are different mechanics and should not be ranked as one simple rate list.

  • S&P 500 Index: 9.5% annual cap
  • S&P 500 Index: 12.5% annual point-to-point cap, Fee-bearing option
  • S&P 500 Index: 100% annual participation rate
  • S&P 500 Index: 47% annual participation rate

Liquidity terms

Why access rules deserve as much attention as rates

A fixed indexed annuity can preserve more control than an income-only contract, but access is still governed by the surrender schedule, free-withdrawal terms, and waiver language. Those details are where many product comparisons become more meaningful than a simple rate list.

  • 10%/yr free withdrawal
  • 7 surrender years
  • Nursing home waiver
  • RMD waiver
  • Terminal illness waiver

Verification note

Use carrier materials as term evidence, then confirm the current version

Carrier materials such as The Standard – Enhanced Choice Index Plus 7 Fixed Indexed Annuity – Brochure (Series).pdf help explain the contract language behind the data on this page; the latest document activity we see is Apr 8, 2026. For the current brochure, rate sheet, or specimen contract, confirm the state-specific version with the carrier or a licensed financial professional.

  • Rates and rider terms can vary by state and issue age
  • Carrier guarantees depend on claims-paying ability
  • Current contract forms should be confirmed before purchase
