S&P 500 annual cap rate

9.6% cap on S&P 500

A five-year-surrender fixed indexed annuity from an A-rated Corebridge carrier, built for index-linked accumulation across cap, participation, multi-year cap, and fixed-trigger strategies on a mix of recognizable benchmark and proprietary volatility-controlled indexes, with no income rider and no premium bonus.

1-year termAdvisorWorld + CANNEX data

Best fit

Buyers who want index-linked accumulation on a shorter five-year surrender commitment, value the ability to mix crediting designs (cap, participation, multi-year cap, trigger) on the same S&P 500 exposure, can meet the contract's higher minimum-premium threshold, and don't need a guaranteed lifetime-income rider built into the contract.

Product analyst notes

How to think about this contract

Why it can stand out

  • Carrier financial-strength is rated by three independent agencies (A.M. Best, S&P, and Moody's), so the strength view is not a single-source read.
  • Surrender term runs five years rather than the seven- or ten-year terms common on retail FIAs — the shortest commitment window in the Corebridge FIA lineup, with the full surrender ladder visible on this page.
  • Three crediting designs are offered on the S&P 500 alone — annual point-to-point cap, participation rate, and a fixed-rate trigger — so a buyer who wants S&P exposure can pick the mechanic that best fits their view of the index, rather than being locked into a single style. A fourth multi-year S&P 500 cap is also offered for buyers willing to lock crediting over the full term.
  • Index menu spans recognizable benchmark indexes (S&P 500, Russell 2000, MSCI EAFE) alongside proprietary volatility-controlled options (Franklin Quality Dividend Total Return 5%, ML Strategic Balanced, PIMCO Global Optima), so the buyer can choose between like-for-like cap comparison and higher-participation alternatives.

What to confirm

  • This contract is not a guaranteed-lifetime-withdrawal product. There is no GLWB income rider attached — the live feed shows an empty income-rider list — and the only contract-level enhancements are surrender-charge waivers (nursing home, terminal illness, RMD, activities of daily living). Do not compare its payout side-by-side with a rider-led income FIA.
  • The published minimum-premium threshold on this filing is at the high end of the FIA market and excludes smaller buyers; check the live key-facts panel for the current minimum and confirm with the carrier before assuming a smaller initial premium will be accepted.
  • There is no premium bonus and no death-benefit roll-up on this contract — the death benefit is the standard contract value, with no guaranteed legacy bump. The 'Plus' in the product name is the carrier's marketing for the multi-strategy chassis, not a bonus designation.
  • Several of the listed indexes (Franklin Quality Dividend Total Return 5%, ML Strategic Balanced, PIMCO Global Optima) are proprietary volatility-controlled benchmarks. Participation rates on these strategies can look high in absolute terms but are not directly comparable to an uncontrolled S&P 500 cap — evaluate each strategy on its own merits. The guaranteed-minimum cap floor on this filing is also very low, so caps and participation rates can reset down toward that floor over the five-year surrender term, and the buyer carries that renewal risk for the full term. New York buyers should note that this filing is not available in NY; Corebridge offers a separate NY-only Power Index 5 sibling filing for New York residents.

Not ideal for

Buyers who need a contractually guaranteed GLWB-rider withdrawal rate, want a premium bonus, expect a death-benefit roll-up beyond the standard contract value, or have an initial premium below the contract's minimum-premium threshold — none of those are what this contract is built to deliver. Also not available to New York residents on this filing; NY buyers should look at the sibling Power Index 5 NY filing instead.

Income riders

Accumulation-focused — no income rider

This contract is designed for tax-deferred accumulation, not guaranteed lifetime income. No GLWB rider was returned because none is part of the contract design — compare against other accumulation FIAs on cap, participation rate, and surrender terms rather than lifetime income.

Common questions about Power Index 5 Plus

Can I lose money in Power Index 5 Plus?

A negative index return by itself does not reduce the contract's account value: Power Index 5 Plus credits 0% — the floor — for that indexed period. The account value can still decrease from applicable rider fees, Performance Rate Rider or other strategy charges, administrative charges, withdrawals, surrender charges, or other contract-specific deductions. In years with no credited interest, those deductions can reduce the account value. Up to 10% of your value can be withdrawn each year without a charge; withdrawals above the penalty-free amount during the surrender period can incur a surrender charge.

When can I access my money without a surrender charge?

Up to 10% of your account value each year is penalty-free. The surrender period runs 5 years; after that you reach full liquidity. The Liquidity tab of the analyzer shows the year-by-year surrender charge.

How do Power Index 5 Plus's crediting strategies compare?

Use "Compare against" in the analyzer to overlay another current Power Index 5 Plus strategy on the same premium, age, years, and hypothetical index path. The control labels the strategy type, rate, index, and context so caps, participation rates, triggers, spreads, and fixed-account choices are not treated as interchangeable.

Crediting design

How the interest-crediting choices are framed

Power Index 5 Plus currently shows 19 distinct indexed or fixed crediting choices across 20 current rate listings, including S&P 500 Index, with 10 volatility-controlled index options grouped separately. These choices matter because caps, participation rates, fixed accounts, spreads, renewal terms, and fee-bearing rider variants are different mechanics and should not be ranked as one simple rate list.

  • S&P 500 Index: 9.6% annual cap
  • S&P 500 Index: 8.6% annual cap
  • S&P 500 Index: 100% annual participation rate
  • S&P 500 Index: 52% annual participation rate

Liquidity terms

Why access rules deserve as much attention as rates

A fixed indexed annuity can preserve more control than an income-only contract, but access is still governed by the surrender schedule, free-withdrawal terms, and waiver language. Those details are where many product comparisons become more meaningful than a simple rate list.

  • 10%/yr free withdrawal
  • 5 surrender years
  • Nursing home waiver
  • RMD waiver
  • Terminal illness waiver

Verification note

Use carrier materials as term evidence, then confirm the current version

Carrier materials such as power index 5 plus 2.pdf help explain the contract language behind the data on this page; the latest document activity we see is Apr 24, 2026. • Rates and rider terms can vary by state and issue age
  • Carrier guarantees depend on claims-paying ability
  • Current contract forms should be confirmed before purchase
