S&P 500 annual point-to-point cap rate

8% cap on S&P 500

A five-year-surrender fixed indexed annuity from an A-rated Corebridge carrier, available only in New York, with a cap-and-trigger index menu across S&P 500, Nasdaq-100, Russell 2000, and MSCI EAFE — no income rider, no premium bonus, no return-of-premium.

1-year termAdvisorWorld + CANNEX data

Best fit

New York residents who want index-linked accumulation across recognizable benchmark caps with a shorter five-year surrender commitment, value seeing both a cap and a performance-trigger alternative on each index, and do not need a guaranteed lifetime-income rider built into the contract.

Product analyst notes

How to think about this contract

Why it can stand out

  • Carrier financial-strength is rated by three independent agencies (A.M. Best, S&P, and Moody's), so the strength view is not a single-source read.
  • Surrender term is five years — shorter than the seven- and ten-year terms common on retail FIAs, so the buyer's commitment window is correspondingly shorter.
  • Index menu spans three recognizable benchmark indexes (S&P 500, Nasdaq-100, Russell 2000) plus a developed-international option (MSCI EAFE), giving buyers a like-for-like cap on each benchmark rather than steering them into a single proprietary index.
  • Each cap index also offers a performance-trigger (declared-rate) variant, so a buyer who expects flat-to-down years can lock in a fixed credit whenever the index closes positive instead of riding a cap.

What to confirm

  • This is the New York-only filing of the Power Index 5 series. It is available exclusively to New York residents — the 49/50-state version (Power Index 5 Plus, productId A001JW) is the sibling filing for buyers outside New York, and the two contracts can differ on caps, participation rates, and features because of New York's separate suitability rules.
  • This contract is not a guaranteed-lifetime-withdrawal product. There is no GLWB income rider and no built-in Protected Income Value — the only liquidity protections beyond the free-withdrawal allowance are nursing-home and terminal-illness waivers. Do not compare its payout side-by-side with a rider-led income FIA.
  • There is no premium bonus and no return-of-premium guarantee on this contract — features that some retail FIAs include to soften the surrender commitment. A buyer comparing this to a bonus FIA should weigh that tradeoff explicitly against the shorter five-year surrender term.
  • The guaranteed-minimum cap floor sits well below the current cap, so caps on the index strategies can reset down toward that floor across the surrender term, and the buyer carries that renewal risk for the full five years.

Not ideal for

Buyers outside New York (the 49/50-state Power Index 5 Plus filing is the sibling product for them), buyers who need a contractually guaranteed lifetime withdrawal rate from a GLWB rider, buyers who want a premium bonus or a return-of-premium guarantee, or buyers who expect a death-benefit roll-up beyond the standard contract death benefit.

Income riders

Accumulation-focused — no income rider

This contract is designed for tax-deferred accumulation, not guaranteed lifetime income. No GLWB rider was returned because none is part of the contract design — compare against other accumulation FIAs on cap, participation rate, and surrender terms rather than lifetime income.

Common questions about Power Index 5 NY

Can I lose money in Power Index 5 NY?

A negative index return by itself does not reduce the contract's account value: Power Index 5 NY credits 0% — the floor — for that indexed period. The account value can still decrease from applicable rider fees, Performance Rate Rider or other strategy charges, administrative charges, withdrawals, surrender charges, or other contract-specific deductions. In years with no credited interest, those deductions can reduce the account value. Up to 10% of your value can be withdrawn each year without a charge; withdrawals above the penalty-free amount during the surrender period can incur a surrender charge.

When can I access my money without a surrender charge?

Up to 10% of your account value each year is penalty-free. The surrender period runs 5 years; after that you reach full liquidity. The Liquidity tab of the analyzer shows the year-by-year surrender charge.

How do Power Index 5 NY's crediting strategies compare?

Use "Compare against" in the analyzer to overlay another current Power Index 5 NY strategy on the same premium, age, years, and hypothetical index path. The control labels the strategy type, rate, index, and context so caps, participation rates, triggers, spreads, and fixed-account choices are not treated as interchangeable.

Crediting design

How the interest-crediting choices are framed

Power Index 5 NY currently shows 10 distinct indexed or fixed crediting choices across 12 current rate listings, including S&P 500 Index and Nasdaq-100 Index, with 4 volatility-controlled index options grouped separately. These choices matter because caps, participation rates, fixed accounts, spreads, renewal terms, and fee-bearing rider variants are different mechanics and should not be ranked as one simple rate list.

  • S&P 500 Index: 8% annual cap
  • S&P 500 Index: 7% annual cap
  • S&P 500 Index: 100% annual participation rate
  • Nasdaq-100 Index: 8.25% annual cap

Liquidity terms

Why access rules deserve as much attention as rates

A fixed indexed annuity can preserve more control than an income-only contract, but access is still governed by the surrender schedule, free-withdrawal terms, and waiver language. Those details are where many product comparisons become more meaningful than a simple rate list.

  • 10%/yr free withdrawal
  • 5 surrender years
  • Nursing home waiver
  • Terminal illness waiver

Verification note

Use carrier materials as term evidence, then confirm the current version

Carrier materials such as corebridge power series.pdf help explain the contract language behind the data on this page; the latest document activity we see is Apr 24, 2026. For the current brochure, rate sheet, or specimen contract, confirm the state-specific version with the carrier or a licensed financial professional.

  • Rates and rider terms can vary by state and issue age
  • Carrier guarantees depend on claims-paying ability
  • Current contract forms should be confirmed before purchase
