GLWB lifetime payout rate

Orbiter Income 5 is a short, five-year-surrender, A-rated fixed indexed annuity from AuguStar Financial built around a real optional GLWB rider (Equilibrium Plus) with a tiered roll-up on the withdrawal base and a GAP rider that floors the account value at the end of the term.

Best fit

Buyers who want lifetime income from a published, optional GLWB rider with a compound roll-up on the withdrawal base, who value a short five-year lockup over the longer surrender windows typical of income FIAs, and who are comfortable with a rider fee charged against the withdrawal base and a single-source A.M. Product analyst notes

How to think about this contract

Why it can stand out

  • Lifetime income comes via a real, optional GLWB rider — the Equilibrium Plus Rider — with a published withdrawal rate and a compound roll-up on the withdrawal base during deferral, so the income figure on this page is directly comparable to other rider-led FIAs on the site.
  • The withdrawal-base roll-up is contractually defined in two tiers (a primary rate during the early years and a tail rate thereafter), so a buyer can model the growth of the income base across a longer deferral horizon from the rider terms alone.
  • The contract carries an unusually short five-year surrender schedule for an income-led FIA, paired with an annual free-withdrawal allowance and a nursing-home waiver — liquidity discipline is meaningful but the lockup window is shorter than the seven- to ten-year designs typical of the income segment.
  • A separate Guaranteed Accumulation Protection (GAP) rider promises a guaranteed minimum account value at the end of the surrender term, so even a buyer who never elects income has a floor on the contract value at maturity.

What to confirm

  • The Equilibrium Plus Rider charges an explicit annual fee against the withdrawal base, not the account value, and the contract publishes both a current and a maximum fee rate — effective drag can run higher than the current rate if the carrier later moves the fee toward its contractual maximum, so model the rider on both fee levels before committing.
  • The income rider is flagged not RMD-friendly in the live feed, so buyers planning to use this for qualified retirement money should confirm with the carrier how rider income interacts with required minimum distributions before deferring.
  • There is no premium bonus and no return-of-premium guarantee on this contract — the income story rides entirely on the rider's withdrawal rate and roll-up, with no day-one lift to the income base from the carrier.
  • Annuitization is available on a single-life basis only and joint-life payouts are not offered on this filing — couples who need joint-life lifetime income through annuitization will need a different contract.

Not ideal for

Buyers who need RMD-friendly rider income, a joint-life lifetime payout, a premium bonus that lifts the income base on day one, a rider-fee-free Protected Income Value chassis, or a plain MYGA-style declared rate without any optional rider — none of those are what this contract is built to deliver.

Common questions about Orbiter Income 5

Can I lose money in Orbiter Income 5?

A negative index return by itself does not reduce the contract's account value: Orbiter Income 5 credits 0% — the floor — for that indexed period. The account value can still decrease from applicable rider fees, Performance Rate Rider or other strategy charges, administrative charges, withdrawals, surrender charges, or other contract-specific deductions. In years with no credited interest, those deductions can reduce the account value. Up to 10% of your value can be withdrawn each year without a charge; withdrawals above the penalty-free amount during the surrender period can incur a surrender charge.

Is the Equilibrium Plus Rider income rider worth the 1.15% fee?

It depends on whether you will use the guaranteed income. If you are accumulating only, you can skip it. If you want guaranteed lifetime income later, the 10% roll-up and 5.05% withdrawal rate can make it worthwhile — model it in the Income tab of the analyzer above.

When can I access my money without a surrender charge?

Up to 10% of your account value each year is penalty-free. The surrender period runs 5 years; after that you reach full liquidity. The Liquidity tab of the analyzer shows the year-by-year surrender charge.

How do Orbiter Income 5's crediting strategies compare?

Use "Compare against" in the analyzer to overlay another current Orbiter Income 5 strategy on the same premium, age, years, and hypothetical index path. The control labels the strategy type, rate, index, and context so caps, participation rates, triggers, spreads, and fixed-account choices are not treated as interchangeable.

Crediting design

How the interest-crediting choices are framed

Orbiter Income 5 currently shows 22 distinct indexed or fixed crediting choices across 26 current rate listings, including S&P 500 Index, with 16 volatility-controlled index options grouped separately. These choices matter because caps, participation rates, fixed accounts, spreads, renewal terms, and fee-bearing rider variants are different mechanics and should not be ranked as one simple rate list.

  • S&P 500 Index: 4.15% annual cap
  • S&P 500 Index: 5.65% annual cap
  • S&P 500 Index: 4.2% annual point-to-point cap
  • S&P 500 Index: 5.65% annual point-to-point cap

Income rider language

What to look for before treating the rider as income

Equilibrium Plus Rider is the main income-rider entry returned for this product. Rider terms can affect the tradeoff between future lifetime withdrawals, contract value, beneficiary value, and cost, so the exact state version and rider election should be confirmed before comparing it to annuitization or income-only contracts.

  • 5.05% withdrawal rate
  • 1.15% rider fee

Liquidity terms

Why access rules deserve as much attention as rates

A fixed indexed annuity can preserve more control than an income-only contract, but access is still governed by the surrender schedule, free-withdrawal terms, and waiver language. Those details are where many product comparisons become more meaningful than a simple rate list.

  • 10%/yr free withdrawal
  • 5 surrender years
  • Nursing home waiver

Verification note

For the current brochure, rate sheet, or specimen contract, confirm the state-specific version with the carrier or a licensed financial professional.

  • Rates and rider terms can vary by state and issue age
  • Carrier guarantees depend on claims-paying ability
