S&P 500 annual cap rate

9.6% cap on S&P 500

A seven-year-surrender fixed indexed annuity from an A-rated Corebridge subsidiary, structured for accumulation with no income rider — strategy menu spans an S&P 500 annual cap, an S&P 500 declared-rate trigger, and one- and two-year participation-rate options on three proprietary volatility-controlled indexes.

Best fit

Buyers who want index-linked accumulation on a seven-year surrender commitment with a recognizable S&P 500 cap as the like-for-like benchmark, plus the option to layer in higher-participation proprietary-index or two-year strategies, from a large tri-agency-rated carrier — and who do not need a built-in lifetime income rider.

Product analyst notes

How to think about this contract

Why it can stand out

  • Crediting menu offers both a recognizable S&P 500 annual point-to-point cap and an S&P 500 declared-rate (trigger) strategy that credits a fixed amount whenever the index return is zero or positive — two different ways to play the same benchmark in one contract.
  • Strategy lineup includes one-year and two-year participation-rate options on three proprietary volatility-controlled indexes (AQR DynamiQ Allocation, ML Strategic Balanced, PIMCO Global Optima), each available in a base and an 'Enhanced Participation Rate' variant, so buyers willing to accept a strategy charge can lift participation meaningfully above the no-fee version.
  • Free-withdrawal allowance and the full seven-year surrender ladder are visible on this page rather than gated behind a sales brochure, and the contract includes nursing-home, terminal-illness, and RMD surrender-charge waivers.
  • Carrier financial-strength is rated by three independent agencies (A.M. Best, S&P, and Moody's), so the strength view is triangulated rather than single-source.

What to confirm

  • This is the accumulation-only variant of the Power Protector family. There is no GLWB rider and no Protected Income Value mechanism on this contract — Corebridge sells the income-rider version under the 'Power 7 Protector Plus Income' name as a separate filing. Do not compare this contract's strategy menu side-by-side with a rider-led income FIA's published withdrawal rate.
  • Several of the highest-participation strategies are labeled 'Enhanced Participation Rate' — on Corebridge's Power Protector chassis these enhanced strategies typically carry an annual strategy charge deducted from the account value regardless of index performance. The headline cap on this page is deliberately drawn from the un-enhanced S&P 500 cap; weigh the enhanced strategies separately, factoring in their fee.
  • The proprietary index strategies (AQR DynamiQ Allocation, ML Strategic Balanced, PIMCO Global Optima) and the two-year crediting terms can show high participation rates in absolute terms but are not directly comparable to a one-year S&P 500 cap — each carries its own volatility-control mechanic and longer crediting lookback. Evaluate each strategy on its own merits before assuming a headline number transfers.
  • Power 7 Protector is filed in 49 jurisdictions (the live feed shows 49 states including DC, excluding New York). Confirm state availability for the contract owner's residence before applying — and note that Corebridge also issues five-year (Power 5 Protector) and ten-year (Power 10 Protector) surrender variants of the same chassis; the seven-year ladder on this contract is the middle option.

Not ideal for

Buyers who need a contractually guaranteed lifetime withdrawal rate from a GLWB rider (look at the Power 7 Protector Plus Income filing instead), need shorter-than-seven-year liquidity (the Power 5 Protector variant runs five years) or longer accumulation runway with a premium bonus, or want a plain MYGA-style declared rate without any index-linked crediting strategies.

Income riders

Accumulation-focused — no income rider

This contract is designed for tax-deferred accumulation, not guaranteed lifetime income. No GLWB rider was returned because none is part of the contract design — compare against other accumulation FIAs on cap, participation rate, and surrender terms rather than lifetime income.

Common questions about Power 7 Protector

Can I lose money in Power 7 Protector?

A negative index return by itself does not reduce the contract's account value: Power 7 Protector credits 0% — the floor — for that indexed period. The account value can still decrease from applicable rider fees, Performance Rate Rider or other strategy charges, administrative charges, withdrawals, surrender charges, or other contract-specific deductions. In years with no credited interest, those deductions can reduce the account value. Up to 10% of your value can be withdrawn each year without a charge; withdrawals above the penalty-free amount during the surrender period can incur a surrender charge.

When can I access my money without a surrender charge?

Up to 10% of your account value each year is penalty-free. The surrender period runs 7 years; after that you reach full liquidity. The Liquidity tab of the analyzer shows the year-by-year surrender charge.

How do Power 7 Protector's crediting strategies compare?

Use "Compare against" in the analyzer to overlay another current Power 7 Protector strategy on the same premium, age, years, and hypothetical index path. The control labels the strategy type, rate, index, and context so caps, participation rates, triggers, spreads, and fixed-account choices are not treated as interchangeable.

Crediting design

How the interest-crediting choices are framed

Power 7 Protector currently shows 33 distinct indexed or fixed crediting choices across 41 current rate listings, including S&P 500 Index, with 24 volatility-controlled index options grouped separately. These choices matter because caps, participation rates, fixed accounts, spreads, renewal terms, and fee-bearing rider variants are different mechanics and should not be ranked as one simple rate list.

  • S&P 500 Index: 9.6% annual cap
  • S&P 500 Index: 8.6% annual cap
  • S&P 500 Index: 100% annual participation rate
  • S&P 500 Index: 52% annual participation rate

Liquidity terms

Why access rules deserve as much attention as rates

A fixed indexed annuity can preserve more control than an income-only contract, but access is still governed by the surrender schedule, free-withdrawal terms, and waiver language. Those details are where many product comparisons become more meaningful than a simple rate list.

  • 10%/yr free withdrawal
  • 7 surrender years
  • Nursing home waiver
  • RMD waiver
  • Terminal illness waiver

Verification note

Use carrier materials as term evidence, then confirm the current version

Carrier materials such as Corebridge Financial (American General Life Insurance Company) – Power 7 Protector – Brochure (I6110CON : 03-24).pdf.pdf help explain the contract language behind the data on this page; the latest document activity we see is Apr 24, 2026. For the current brochure, rate sheet, or specimen contract, confirm the state-specific version with the carrier or a licensed financial professional.

  • Rates and rider terms can vary by state and issue age
  • Carrier guarantees depend on claims-paying ability
